6/27/2023 0 Comments A Single Breath by Lucy ClarkeTell you what, I’m dying to chat to you about your travels. Thanks for inviting me to this gorgeous beach Lucy, I know how busy you must be. Thanks Oh this is a lovely setting for a cuppa and a cake! There’s plenty of tea in the pot so, can you just flatten that rug out a bit please? Don’t want to spill the tea. She’s just getting settled – oh what’s that you’ve brought Lucy? Some shortbread for later? Why thank you very much indeed. it was a bit hard carrying the tray and cake on the sand but we’ve managed it. So, we’ve actually taking the whole affair outside today – well its a bit hot inside and well when Lucy told me about her secret beach I jumped at the chance! So here we are…. Oh we are very lucky indeed to have the lovely Lucy Clarke on the blog today! She’s taken time out from travelling and has invited me to visit her on her lovely beach. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Robert fulghum quotes kindergartenObservations on human behavior play a big part in Fulghum's work. The lives of the Fulghum children are mentioned with a kind of wistful sadness, and one can tell that the author misses those days when the children were little. Robert Fulghum has used the essays to express childhood dreams, hopes, experiences, and regrets. Although the author never thought of collecting the essays for publication, the literary agent encouraged it and "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things" was born. The mother, a literary agent, contacted Fulghum and asked if there were more things he'd written. One day, a child's mother found one of the author's essays in the boy's backpack. The fundamental rules of life, such as sharing, washing hands and playing fair began to find their way into elementary schools. Soon, the essays were traveling from one person to the next, making their way across the country. The pieces entertained and inspired people. The thoughts or essays were written for self expression and as pieces to be given to family and friends or shared with the author's Unitarian congregation. The author started writing random thoughts, observations, memories, and hopes many years ago with no plan to publish. "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things" by Robert Fulghum is series of personal essays on a wide variety of topics. 6/27/2023 0 Comments ImajicaCabal (the book on which Nightbreed was based). The Hellbound Heart (the novella on which the first Hellraiser was based)." The Forbidden" (the novella on which the first Candyman was based).Clive Barkers Book Of The Damned A Hellraiser Companion. He has a nearly half-century long friendship and artistic partnership with Hellraiser star Doug Bradley, the two having met when they were in secondary school and collaborated on dozens of projects since. He has also created characters and series for comic books, and some of his stories have been adapted to the medium. On the Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism, his stories lie pretty far on the cynical side, with heavily flawed but sympathetic protagonists and an overall dark and gritty tone, although some of his novels have had happy and magically enchanting endings, and have featured themes such as love and redemption.īarker is also an artist, with some of his paintings having been featured in galleries in the United States, as well as illustrating the covers of his own books. His stories are usually set in a contemporary urban setting, but with Another Dimension or many dimensions. His works almost always feature sexual overtones that are graphic, disturbing, and disgusting in nature. Clive Barker (born Octoin Liverpool, England) is a British horror and dark fantasy author responsible for over a dozen novels, several movies, a few graphic novels, some artwork, and a couple of video games as well. Given that the time between the birth and death dates of Proto-Indo-European could not have been infinite, precisely how long a time was it? Do languages, which are living, changing things, have life expectancies? My attention was drawn to this by a very positive review from none other than Lois McMaster Bujold back in 2009 on her Myspace blog (the review is now lost, alas, due to Myspace deleting it). But it helps to begin by considering how long a period probably preceded that. NwhyteSecond paragraph of third chapter: This chapter concentrates on the death date, the date after which Proto-Indo-European must have ceased to exist. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Siddhartha hermann hesse amazonIt was inspired by the author’s visit to India before World War I. Well, personally I don't believe this, but this movie had me suspending my belief for 90 minutes. Siddhartha, novel by Hermann Hesse based on the early life of Buddha, published in German in 1922. (The few scenes with set light are awful.) The beauty of the landscapes is not only the superficial one of a postcard, but the philosophical one that tells you that a beautiful world is essentially a good, complete, happy world: a world in which you can afford to completely focus on your personal search for meaning and spirituality. A good deal of the films success is due to Sven Nykvist's marvellous camera work, done mostly with natural light. This film manages to capture both: the artificiality of the setting as well as the philosophical sincereness - plus that certain naive sense of beauty that makes Hesse so appealing and disgusting at once. As he is prone to put all the meaning into lengthy, philosophical dialogues, this makes him utterly difficult to turn into film. Hesse's characters are mostly soul-searchers wandering around in rather artificial surroundings - which is true in the case of this timeless, ancient India. Still, I love this film, even because I consider it to be a very appropriate filming. I used to love Hermann Hesse and this book in my teens. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Rawi hage beirut hellfire societyLike his late father, Pavlov enables the final journey for outcast cadavers no one else will touch. What he’s undoubtedly accepted is that life’s only certainty is death.įor second-generation Beirut undertaker Pavlov, death is his inherited livelihood. “Although the characters in this novel are fictitious,” the final sentence of Hage’s ( Carnival, 2013) spectacular novel acknowledges, “this is a book of mourning for the many who witnessed senseless wars, and for those who perished in those wars.” For the Lebanon-born, Canadian-domiciled, International IMPAC Dublin Award winner Hage, real-life experiences surely drive his fiction, for he witnessed nine of the 15-plus years of the Lebanese Civil War. 6/25/2023 0 Comments An unquiet mind full textAt just over 200 pages, it’s not a marathon read, but there’s plenty to pore over. The honesty and truth ring through, and I could see myself in parts of it, making it very easy to relate to. The book is subtitled “A memoir of moods and madness” and it holds nothing back, going deeply into her volatile moods and the madness they created. It opened up possibilities I thought had long fled me. One could have a real career–indeed, become a doctor–while living with a debilitating illness. This book touched me in so many ways, giving me a glimpse of the experiences of another person with my disease, and showing me that it didn’t have to be the proverbial death sentence. At the time, it was a quick read, but I lingered over paragraphs and phrases that seemed to echo my very existence. I found this book in a search for books on bipolar disorder very early in my diagnosis. Her story was the most inspirational thing I found while dealing with my diagnosis. Even though she was suffering greatly in its throes, she managed to put herself through medical school. Kay Redfield Jamison details the author’s experiences with bipolar disorder. Quite possibly the most influential book I’ve ever read, and certainly the most pertinent, An Unquiet Mind by Dr. It will take all of his considerable power to keep from burning everything to the ground.ĭon’t miss the start of the next great Fantasy LitRPG Series by Seth Ring, author of Nova Terra. It's possible that they were some of the bouys who picked on Reggie when he was a little kid. They are classsic bullies, living to hurt and put down.
